Is Xbox really better than Playstion Network?
46 days 17 hours ago | by: Taker_129

For the past two years now, the gaming media has had this assumption that Xbox Live (XBL) is better than the PLAYSTATION Network (PSN).   But they seem to make this assumption even with out looking at PSN as a whole.  XBL is a great service, there is no denying that, but so is PSN.  Firstly, they both offer the gamer the ability to jump online and play/communicate with friends, if the game supports it.  Secondly, they both offer games, DLC, and movies from their respective stores. And thirdly, they both have a rewards system in place, Microsoft’s Achievements and Sony’s Trophies.  Now that I’ve got the basic features out of the way, now I’m going to break down their differences.

XBL:

·         Reputation rating which is voted on by other players who decide to either prefer or avoid another player. The reputation defaults to 100%(Five stars) over time after one player has preferred you. Bad reputation affects reputation positively, hence less than three stars(default) is unachievable.

·         Complaint filing system, which allows a user to report another user that has broken the Xbox Live Terms of Use

·         Windows Live messenger integration

·         Voice Chat (wireless or wired headset required)

·         Video Chat (Live Vision camera required, with headset optional for chatting)

·         Multiplayer gameplay, where a user can link up 4 Xbox's to play together (known as system link), or connect online (Online requires Xbox Live Gold)

·         Enhanced matchmaking using cumulative gamerscore, reputation, location/language profile, and gamer zone

·         Bio section in which one can list personal interests, URLs, etc.

·         Parental controls, limiting children's exposure to other users ("Family Settings")

·         Inside Xbox is a newsletter about Xbox Live news, events, products, interviews and games that is integrated in the Xbox 360 Dashboard. Content for Inside Xbox is created by the Xbox global marketing team and features streaming video segments "Pick Up and Play", "Major’s Minute" with Larry Hryb and "Game with Fame".

As one new feature is the ability to watch streaming movies and TV shows from Netflix, some of which will be HD, onto the Xbox 360. This feature will be free to Xbox Live Gold members with Netflix accounts in North America, and once enabled, users will be able to watch with their friends in a party with up to 8 players. Xbox Live members will have the ability to pick from over 10,000 movies and episodes, as if they were to choose on the website.[23] But, when a player parties up with a group, they would also have the ability to join games together or view a slideshow of photos.

Another feature will give players an option to create Avatars. Players would be able to customize from changing body shape, facial features, hair and clothes, as being able to download more clothing from the Xbox Live Marketplace.[24] Xbox Live requires that users make an avatar.[22] Another feature is the ability to install an entire game disc onto the Xbox 360's hard drive, which will decrease loading times for older games. The disc for the installed game must still be present in the drive for verification.[25]

The Xbox Guide has also been redesigned. Players will not only be able to view their friends and messages, but will be able to access their game library. If a user has installed any game onto their Xbox 360 Hard drive, they will be able to immediately start the game from the guide, whether they are in a game or in the dashboard.[27] Major Nelson also announced that the update will also support 16X10 on VGA or HDMI, expanding resolutions.[28]

While previous system updates have been stored on internal memory, this will be the first update to require a storage device. The update requires at least 128MB free space on either a memory card or a hard drive.[29] Microsoft has stated that many Core or Arcade users will not have sufficient space on their limited memory cards for the new update thus providing them with a free 512MB memory card or a discounted 20GB hard drive ($19.99).[30][31]

Membership for XBL gold is $7.99 a month, $19.99 for 3 months, and $49.99 for a year.  XBL Silver is free,  but you do not get any of the online features, only access to the online Marketplace. (Ref. en.wikipedia.org )

PSN:

Commerce/Entertainment

PlayStation Home is a 3D virtual community-based service for the PlayStation Network. It is currently in its closed beta stage, with an open beta scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2008.. Home allows users to create their own 3D avatar for their PlayStation 3 console. This avatar will get their own home space, which can be decorated with items players can either purchase via micropayments or receive through games. There is also a virtual world that players can explore and interact with other users, play games, invite friends to their home spaces, and much more. In the future Home will also expand, allowing players to have access to items such as clothing, luxury housing and household items which can be purchased from the PlayStation Store.

On 18 September 2008 the PlayStation 3's Folding@home application became Life with PlayStation. Along with the existing Folding@home functionality, the application also provides the user with access to information "channels", the first of which being the Live Channel which offers news headlines and weather through a 3D globe. The user can rotate and zoom in to any part of the world to access information provided by Google News, The Weather Channel, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center, among other sources.[14]

At E3 2008, Jack Tretton announced a new partnership between Sony and Google which will allow users to upload video content to YouTube from within games (such as Mainichi Issho). This is also part of the Life with PlayStation service. (Ref. en.wikipedia.org )

PSP integration allows anyone with a psp to connect wirelessly to there ps3 and stream any music, movies, or photos stored (or streaming from a pc) on the ps3’s hard drive.

Integrated media server allows PS3 owners to stream movies, music, and photos from their PCs and instantly copy it to the PS3’s hard drive.

The Integrated Web Browser supports flash 9 and allows for content to be downloaded from the internet right to PS3’s hard drive.  It also supports the basic functions of normal PC browsers.

Membership is free for all USERS.

Now after we have compared the differences between XBL and PSN, “Is XBL really better than PSN?”

i'm a PS3 fanboy and i know from facts that Live is better than PSN by a considerable margin right now. the only thing that maintains the PSN competing is that it's free.

but i been playing R2 and it's pretty cool as it is, i'm not a big fan of online games so this is not an important aspect for me as it is the blu-ray player.

thanks god the online on the PS3 is free! so i can play online whatever i want without restrictions because if i had an X360 i wouldn't never pay to play online so i would never know how it is to play game online. =)

2 - Yes XBL is still better...
Especially after NXE, even before it was still better. One thing you didn't point out that when I update my ps3/game it takes forever on xbox it is almost instant in comparison. On a lot of multiplat games the ps3 version lags and has network issues. Honestly this subject has been milked to death, PSN is technically better since its free but I'd prefer XBL over it all day. Honestly those are the reasons I like XBL better, that and my ps3 constantly freezes when in-game messaging(LBP & SC4). In the end it comes down to opinion neither is THAT much better than the other. BTW I hate the new dashboard its too clunky.

3 - It's all personal preference.
I expect one thing from an online service, free or not. I expect to play games online. Considering this, for folks like me, the free service is great and taking into account my only desire for an online service, puts the PSN on top. This is in no way saying that one is better than the other in terms of features, I am simply saying that for me, if it lets me play online and is free, that is the card that trumps a pay to play service that offers the same thing I want out of an online gaming network.

6 - I don't care
All I want is the ability to play games online FREE. I don't need all the bells and whistles of XBL. Most people nowadays use AIM instead of messenger

No. Because you have to pay for 'Live.

EDIT:

Also XBLA games I bought should be free to play online because I store the whole game on my harddrive, so why limit me the multiplayer content that was forcibly bundled and thrust upon me?

And, XBL undoes all the work with PC games being online for free and compared to PC gaming, doesn't do that much extra for the cost.

I would have to say that if you were only playing online games, they are pretty equal. It usually take a bit longer for a ps3 game to find a match, but you pay for live. You pay for some demos with qore (optional), but you get all the demos for free on XBL. They are pretty even there. The thing is if you want cross game chat, If you want a great community (I am talking about the community that works at Microsoft that will just sit down and play games with you). If you want all the little things that really add up, Xbox Live is just far superior.

8.1 - You must not play live if you think live is faster at matchmaking
What I like about PSN is the 1st party online system, like games with R2, SOCOM where you can choose what types of maps, room, settings you want to play. Like gears2 online sucks, because the matchmaking makes the game almost unplayable. I like gears but after waiting 10 minutes to get into a game and then after the round ends I have to look for another room. I feel I spend more time looking for a match than I actually play, also on gears you never get to play all the maps, you never get a choice because the matchmaking system picks 2 maps, so you can literally play only 2 maps on gears over and over and over. Gears is the only reason i have a 360 and there is noway I'm gonna pay for that kind of service, when I get better service out of PSN...So I'm not renewing my live, for me I have friends that I play on PSN with and I dont have any complains. I like a simple online system, log on play online games, those other features people scream about I don't care or want I'm a grown man, it's okay if you are a 12 year old or gay and want to meet and chat with everyone you meet online

8.2 - Awwwww, you brought up Gear 2
The game that had issues day 1, but now is fine. Then you did the real funny thing and brought up socom. I know it is better now, but it still isn't fast. Why didn't you bring up Halo? Oh because it is usually instant. I would say that r2 has been doing dang good, for a psn game though. So you're mad that there is not a community on the ps3? Maybe you justdon't have a headset. It's weird that you don't show your psn id or Live id. Maybe you don't own either console. I love your stories about all of your friends being on psn though, those are cute.

8.3 - oh jolly u so funny
here's the thing jolly, I own a 360, and a ps3, plus a Wii, and a PSP, and lastly my PC....but but but...no live or psn ID, let alone my Wii ID, whats going on...here's the trueth, I don't put up my ids for the simple reason that I DON'T WANT TO MEET FANBOYS SUCH AS YOU JOLLY...let alone talk to you. Which could be the same reasoning that funkysolo don't have them posted...you'll have to ask him for them if you want them...but ive met 360 fanboys and work with an annoying ps3 fanboy, which i no longer talk too. As soon as you read that he preferred ps3, his argument is invalid and/or is a ps3 fanboy making crap up... According to you, someone's opinion matters so long as they prefer your favorite console. Well guess what, I prefer a PS3 over the 360 any day, so i guess my opinion don't matter no more......but I'm really just posting so that as you read this you realize i just wasted 3 mins of your life or maybe more....really depends what grade your in...

8.4 - Actually....
What makes your opinion not matter is the multiple amount of typos. Also the completelack of being able to form a sentence that is understandable. You should really get some grammar lessons. I don't really care which you prefer. It's all a matter of opinion. Throwing out ran"dumb" (so-called) facts to try and make another think look bad is ridiculous though.

I will agree that Xbox live is still a bit better then PSN. BUT what I don't like is that PLAYERS are still hosting the games for 90% of the titles on XBL. Now we are paying 50$ a year and ppl who have a month by month plan are paying more. Why do we not have dedicated servers? I mean what are we paying for? Most of the other great features XBL Has PSN has or will be getting somewhere down the road. So what exactly is our money being used for? Not to mention that MS prolly makes a butt ton of money with the marketplace. Now don't get me wrong I have been a XBL member since the service launched with the Xbox 1 and back then it was worth paying for but now I really don't see why we are paying. I'm not gonna cancel my account or anything but I'm just gonna say 2 words "DEDICATED SERVERS"

for the record demos ar All free on psn and so is 90% of the themes. Psn also has web browsing.(I barely use my computer) yes I own them both, but the truth is i paid for the system paying for high speed internet, and paying for games, so why pay just to play another player? and is it just me or is the nxe just a 3d version of the playstation xmb with a touch of a wii avatar?(apparentley the were running out of their own ideas.)

13.1 - That's right and...
How come nobody's talked about the times Xbl's servers crashed and nobody could get online? They got a lawsuit about that and they crashed again. XBL is probably better, they've been doing it longer. But I wouldn't know because my 360 got the RROD.

I didn't waste my time sending it back, I just got a PS3.

14 - I don't care which "service" is "better", I use it to play games; so PSN is better
When the rubber hits the road, all I want to do is play games. I don't really care how I get to that point as long as it's efficient. Both connect and play, but the PS3 is best in that regard because it's free. I'm not going to get double-dipped by a P2P based Network. Screw that. That was the one factor that made me not get a 360. RRoD? Doesn't bother me as much as paying for something you do for free. You disagree? Then send me checks for breathing from Air Box Live.

Anyways, the PSN games connect fast and there's no noticeable lag in most of the games I play (*Warhawk has lag at times, but that's a P2P based game, I guess. UTII might be the only other game I can think of with lag).

Fast, lag-free gaming is all I ask for; the PSN does that, so I'm happy. The other bells and whistles are just that.

XBL is far superior to PSN. If PSN wasnt free i would never pay for it. I rebought COD4 on the 360 because of the lag on PSN. Plus XLB has far more features and a better community (sony should have put a headset in every box)
